The Laureate's been out of work
And with the lack of wages
He's lacked the inspiration
To write poems for these pages
But when at last the offer came
Of meaningful employment
He knew where his first pay check
Would help him find enjoyment
Two tickets for the Barnsley game
Were ordered for despatch
And for the first time in a year
We came to see a match
New faces that we'd only seen
In papers or tv
Matteo, Rio Ferdinand
Dacourt, Viduka, Keane
How good to hear the Elland roar
And though the sky looked rotten
When Marko scored to grab the lead
The weather was forgotten
The opening ten were fast and slick
Batty looking priceless
Smithy should have found the net
And their defence looked hopeless
Somehow, it all went away
And though we ran out winners
We should be praising all our saints
Instead, we had some sinners:-
Danny Mills played Dracula
Afraid to make a cross
Ollie, playing further up
Out of place and lost
The three up front all did OK
But hardly stayed apart
Matteo made a solid case
For keeping Ian Harte
The bloke beside me summed it up
"You look at all these names
He's got the squad he wanted
Now it's time to win some games!"
